The Directorate of the National Archive of Monuments is a division of the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports. With deep respect for the past and looking forward to the future, the Directorate has undertaken the electronic recording, documentation and management of archives related to the Greek cultural heritage in order to ensure its preservation under optimal conditions and promote its effective and creative utilization. Employing state-of-the-art technology, the Directorate actively promotes the dissemination of knowledge across a broad spectrum of cultural and archaeological realms, supporting scholarly research and facilitating the access to archival content.

Need

The Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports (MoCS) is the sole owner of Greece’s wealthy cultural heritage with a mission to research, collect, care, protect and promote the country’s cultural wealth. The Directorate of the National Archive of Monuments (DEAM) is a division of the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. As part of the DEAM’s mission, arose the need to provide citizens with access to national cultural wealth via the Internet, and would also create as a useful digital archive in the fight against illicit trafficking of national cultural property.

Solution

The project of Digitisation of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture Moveable Monuments Collections divided the country in 8 areas of focus, each of which was assigned to a different IT company to undertake the digitization, digital documentation and development of virtual exhibitions. Uni Systems was responsible for the Messenia, Laconia and Crete districts collaborating with the local Ephorates of Antiquities and archaeological museums to digitize and document in total 45,300 archaeological objects and other archival material. Special focus was given to the metadata management of the digitized objects. 

Project Details

Uni Systems engaged an interdisciplinary team of more than 30 certified professionals with expertise in archaeology, museology, heritage management, photography, technology, and project management. All team members worked in situ across the various districts under our responsibility. 

Benefits

The Directorate of the National Archive of Monuments now has authoritated, identified and documented more than 500.000 movable archaeological monuments creating a unified digital inventory. At the same time, the Directorate now has new interactive, digital services for the public to enjoy and explore thematic exhibitions. The benefits of this project as whole cover:

  • The institution of common practices for digitization and electronic documentation 
  • The establishment of structured digitization units at the local Ephorates of Antiquities and Museums
